You win some, you lose some.

Not every clutch is going to be killer, not every female is going to lay, and not every male is going to breed. But as breeders we can do certain things to level the playing field as best we can each day.

Things like making sure everyone has water all the time. Making sure to visually inspect everyone as often as possible. I like to check on everyone once a day when permitted. There are some points where I feel like I know each and everyone’s mood and well-being. You kind of get to know the animals real well if you pay attention enough.

But still even though we do out best to make sure the end result is a nice big clutch of pearly white eggs, it is still up to mother nature. Case in point. One of my bigger proven girls was getting HUGE. She had palpated for 9 eggs. I was so pumped, I had bred my lemon blast and bee to her. This was going to be a great clutch for sure.

Until this morning.

She ended up giving me 4 slugs and 4 eggs. OUCH! That hurt big time. Yes I got 4 nice looking eggs, but I wanted 9 dammit. I worked for 12 months straight with this girl. I fed her, bathed her, watered her. You name it! Don’t I deserve 9 healthy eggs?

Nope!

Mother nature had other plans for this female. I wish I took some pics but I guess I was so bummed that the though didn’t even cross my mind. Will you forgive me?

The glow before they go.

Just wanted to get a quick update in for you guys. Still only one clutch of eggs in the bator. Fire x normal. Plus it looks like 2 of the eggs are going bad. Maybe the Easter bunny is going to give me some eggs tomorrow? It would be nice!

One thing is for sure, a few of our girls are really glowing like crazy. They say they go through a complete color change when gravid. Well folks these girls are GLOWING, almost like ghosts.

Gravid mojave female

(This is our gravid mojave female)

As you can see our mojave female is glowing like crazy and due anytime now. If you pick her up you can see the eggs in her belly. I believe we have about 4 or 5 eggs from her and our black pastel male.

Normal girl glowing

(This girl was bred by our bee, see the glow?)

Hopefully we get eggs soon, because I am going crazy over here! This is our latest season yet. Have a happy Easter and talk soon!
