Thanksgiving already?

Can you believe next week begins the holiday season? My oh my times sure does fly by the older you get. It was like yesterday that we were just starting to get eggs, playing with all the new babies of the year. Now we’re thinking about reindeer, elves, and Santa!

Oh yeah, let’s not forget the SNOW!

I am really pumped for the snow because with snow comes frozen lakes and with frozen lakes comes ICE FISHING! I love this time of year, its cold fishing is hot and snakes are breeding.

We are just about full swing into breeding mode. I’ve paired the males up with about half the females so far, still a few more females to go though. Everything seems to be right on track and hopefully next year we really produce a good number of babies. We had about 15 clutches this year and we are shooting for at least 30 this coming spring year.

On another note, for some reason my rats just dont want to produce. We have a good colony setup, but no babies. We had 1 liter, we have 3 or so preggo, but no massive influx of babies. What gives? Now is the time of year I really need to feed my girls and the rats are holding out on me!

Anyway enough of my babble. I will try to get another post in here before next week. If not make sure you come out to the NY Reptiles Expo on the 28th. It’s the Sunday right after turkey day. Our booth will be on the stage again. I will have some bigger animals for sale with me, so make sure you come to our table first! They will not last.

Here comes 2011, but wait… 2010 aint over yet!

This time of year is really hectic. We are in the early stages of breeding for the 2011 season and we are still feeding 2010 babies each Tuesday. Add on top of that expanding our rodent production, expanding our breeder female collection, things are spinning out of control.

Well maybe not out of control, but right on the borderline. LOL! It’s been real hard keeping up with so many animals and normal seasonal house chores. The past few days I have been splitting up wood and stacking it. But I have also tried to sneak in some time for the snakes. I tell you, it ain’t easy. My common theme is get a ton done today, cause tomorrow there’s 10x more!

There is hope in site though. We have our breeding stock right where we want it. We did pair some males and females the other day. Only pairing locked up, but that’s OK it’s still real early. We did drop our temps again as planned so now we are 4 degrees cooler at night. Most we will go is 5 on the hot spot. Gotta love those Herpstat NightDrop t-stats!

If my post feels a bit rush, it is… LOL It’s 2am and I need to be up early to get started once again.

I did update some of the pictures on the available page. We now have 2 het pied pairs left, a het albino pair left, albino male, lesser male, and some other odds and ends. I do have a few more animals to list so keep on checking back.

I will try to get some more pictures for you guys soon. Until then, stay cheesy!

HELP! My hatchling ball python won’t eat.

Here I am sitting here putting together this weeks feeder list. Between the breeders I currently have and the hatchlings that are new, I am looking at a huge number of animals that will need to be fed. Not only do I have to feed a good sized number of animals but it has to be done in a timely, efficient manner. It can’t take me hours. I have a ton of other things that need to get done as well.

Here are some tips to get not just your hatchlings to eat, but also the bigger ball pythons you may own.

First and foremost, I believe in feeding at night. Or at least dusk. If you haven’t noticed yet ball pythons are really active at night. What better time to feed then when they are active! For my hatchlings, I make sure I feed them at night, with the room dark. No noise, no disruptions, no noisy neighbors kids. You get the idea. There main goal in life on Tuesday nights is too eat! LOL

I also prescent the room. I know, you might not hold value or believe me when I say it works but it does! When I first get home from picking up my feeders I drop them off in the snake room and let them “stew”. I find that if I let them sit in front of the racks for at least 30 minutes it really gets the snakes moving and active. Many a time when I come back in the room they are all perched and ready to eat. As soon as I pop open a tub, BAM!! They waste no time eating.

Same thing with the hatchlings. I prescent the room. And when I feed, I leave the room. I do not come back for a few hours and when I do I check on who has or has not ate. Sometimes I will leave the food offering in the tub with them overnight. I find that sometimes the hatchlings take a little time to go. Sometimes though, they are voracious eaters and slam the mouse right away!

Speaking of mice, lets talk about the proper food you should be offering your hatchling. For their first feeding I almost always offer them a hopper mouse. I find that the behavior of the mouse almost makes them irresistible to any hatchling ball. Something about the way they “hop” around the tub makes the balls slam them. I will however get some holdouts. Which I will then try a rat pink or rat fuzzy on. Sometimes they take it. Sometimes they don’t. If they don’t take it, then I will offer a hopper mouse right away. This alone pisses them off and they eat. IF all else fails, I will crumble up some newspaper and fill the tub with it. It helps provide a sense of security for the hatchling. Which is sometimes all it needs.

Before I wrap it up, I want to just let you know that it is perfectly normal for a hatchling to not eat right away. If they did absorb the yolk to the fullest then they have enough nutrients in their body to last a few weeks of not eating. Just make sure you monitor them and seek the help of a professional if you feel enough time has passed and you have yet to get them too feed.

I hope this helps some of you guys out there and I hope all your hatchlings eat this season for you with ease!
